I recently had a minor surgery and, aside from the nerves beforehand, the experience was easier than I expected. The anesthesiologist gave me a calming medication that helped me relax before the procedure. I remember the brief moment of wondering about the sensation of the oxygen mask and then waking up in recovery. Once the staff confirmed I felt fine, they let me sip water—an incredible relief after being without it. A few hours later I was on my way home, complete with a post‑surgical bra and a prescription for pain relief.
After leaving the hospital I was ravenous, so my husband and I stopped at the diner where I devoured a favorite salad. Then I came home and slept for a few hours—sometimes a slow, restful day is exactly what’s needed.
The night after my surgery I made a nonalcoholic version of this milkshake to soothe a sore throat. What makes this milkshake stand out is the combination of true vanilla bean paste and fresh peaches. I first discovered Nielsen‑Massey vanilla from watching Ina Garten, who recommends using high‑quality vanilla. Since then I’ve favored their products, especially the vanilla bean paste, which I use often in desserts. Nielsen‑Massey focuses on quality and careful inspection of beans, and their products carry certifications like gluten‑free and kosher.
Besides the vanilla, the other star of this milkshake is summer peaches. When they’re ripe and juicy, they bring a bright, fruity balance to the creamy vanilla and the warming note of bourbon.

This vanilla peach bourbon milkshake evokes the flavor of homemade peach ice cream from childhood, but with a stronger vanilla profile and an adult touch from the bourbon. It’s perfect for hot days, easy to make, and a fun reason to buy extra peaches while they’re in season.
