Baking can be a calming, creative escape. Mixing flour, butter and eggs and turning simple ingredients into something comforting feels almost like therapy. These cookies came from a happy accident and evolved from a sugar cookie base I often use. I’ve always thought sugar cookies could use a little chocolate, so I folded in mini chocolate chips for a balanced, classic flavor. You can use regular or mini chips depending on how pronounced you want the chocolate.

Chocolate Chip Sugar Cookies

These cookies combine the light texture and sweet flavor of sugar cookies with the richness of semisweet chocolate chips. They bake up with crisp, lightly golden edges and a soft, chewy center. The mini chips add small bursts of chocolate throughout, without overpowering the buttery sugar cookie base.

Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup mini semisweet chocolate chips + more if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.
  • In a stand mixer fitted with the flat beater, cream the room-temperature butter, granulated sugar and vanilla on medium-high until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the egg. With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture gradually until incorporated. Stir in the mini chocolate chips.
  • Form the dough into 1½-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Bake 12–14 minutes, until edges are lightly golden, rotating sheets halfway through for even baking. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve and enjoy.

Enjoy these chocolate chip sugar cookies as a cozy snack, a holiday treat, or a simple way to lift your spirits with a homemade sweet.
